Die Landshuter Hochzeit
Every four years the people of Landshut gather together for three weeks in June-July to celebrate the historical medieval wedding of the Bavarian Duke Georg with the Polish Princess Hedwig in 1475. Similar to the Passion Play in Oberammergau, the townspeople (over 2000 of them in orginal costumes) are cast in the various roles Parades are held every weekend, re-enacting the bride's arrival by carriage into the town. A festival grounds is erected along the river where jousting duals are held, minstrels sing, food and drink are consumed and much merriment is to be had. The pomp and circumstance and the fun put the city of Landshut in a very contagious, festive mood. Every evening the citizens of Landshut picnic downtown on the metal bleachers (Tribunen), socializing and watching spontaneous demonstrations of acrobatics, songs and skits.
