Travelling to Landshut, Germany
The primary goals of the German American Partnership Program are to foster the study of world languages (English and German) and to increase cultural awareness and understanding between Germans and Americans. The AHS GAPP exchange with the Hans-Leinberger Gymnasium in Landshut takes an academic and cultural approach, instead of simply promoting tourism. At the heart of the exchange is the integration of students into the everyday life of their host families and into the classroom activities of their host school. Through regular school attendance at the partner school and living with host families, the students become members of a school, a family and a community.
Participation Requirements
Students who choose to travel to Germany must meet the following:
N.B1: Students who host as juniors or seniors may be allowed to travel with the group the following year based on the discretion and approval of the instructor and administration. These students are not eligible for AHS credit, but will be encouraged to seek college credit for their GAPP participation through their university or college.
N.B.2 The final determination of any student’s participation in GAPP lies with the Assumption High School administration and/or the GAPP coordinator(s).
GAPP for Credit:
Students who travel to Landshut will receive 1/2 academic credit for their attendance at pre-departure meetings, fulfillment of pre-departure expectations, school participation in Landshut and GAPP excursions. The GAPP experience then becomes a part of the permanent academic record and GPA from Assumption High School. This documented participation in an academic and cultural exchange program may enhance students’ post-secondary opportunities.

Pre-Departure Meetings
Prior to flying to Germany, several meetings will be held to prepare both parents and students for the trip and to relay important information concerning passport applications, flights and bus transportation, travel itinerary, trip costs, handling money, fundraising opportunities, and submission of required documentation. IIn order for all participating families to be informed of their obligations and expecations, it is important that both the student and a parent attend all of the pre-departure meetings. The GAPP coordinator will make the best effort to schedule these meetings with the least amount of conflict with other school functions. If the student and/or parent is unable to attend one of these meetings, please communicate that with the GAPP coordinator and make arrangments to get the meeting's information.
